Transformational Leadership Program
25 youth of different ethnicities and backgrounds came together for The Transformational Leadership Program this week. Throughout the week, the group participated in a six day training on Social Cohesion, and learned a lot about what it means to be an empowered youth leader. During the training, participants were asked “Why are youth important?” Excited, engaged and inspired, the youth had diverse responses. As Bawk San puts it so well: “Youths are the light and future of a nation.”

Since early 2018, CSI has been implementing the Transformational Leadership Program, our flagship initiative under the Peace and Conflict program pillar. By strengthening and building up the capacity and leadership skills of diverse youths from conflict-affected Myanmar regions, the program aims to raise their participation and cooperation in peace-building processes and their leadership in fostering social cohesion at the community level. Each cohort of 25 youths attends 3 staggered course modules thematically focused on social cohesion, conflict transformation and peacebuilding. The trainings employ an experiential learning approach that is highly activities-based. After completing all modules, the participants in each cohort are tasked with initiating impact projects in their communities with seed funding from CSI.

Community-based Reconciliation and Dialogue
CSI understands that efforts to dispel misunderstandings and facilitate reconciliation between northern Rakhine communities require a multi-pronged and community-led approach. Understanding and dialogue must be promoted in order to foster conditions for sustained peaceful coexistence and socially cohesive communities. In response, CSI put in place a multi-year program targeting 24 village tracts (6 annually) for diverse community-wide social cohesion initiatives led by local community leaders and an annual cohort of 12 trained youth.
Strengthening Media Best-practices Among Northern Rakhine Communities
In Northern Rakhine State, levels of poor media literacy and low capacity to discern propaganda and rumors from fact have been well documented and have fueled intercommunal violence and tensions in this conflict-affected region. CSI will build the digital literacy skills of 20 community youth, helping them develop platforms for action, and create spaces both online and at community-level to challenge information and counter negative media messages.
Interfaith Dialogue Initiative
By inviting key leaders from Myanmar’s diverse religious communities to convene for interfaith dialogue workshops and an interfaith tour, this initiative aims to dispel misunderstandings, alleviate mistrust, and foster an environment for open communication between religious communities.
